Instead of one specific wavelength, IPL uses a wide spectrum of light around 550 nm to 1200 nm is produced to target melanin in the hair. IPL treatment may also require more sessions than laser treatment.

The right preparation is needed before your hairs are “zapped” during your laser hair removal appointment. If you plan to go through laser hair removal, you should avoid plucking, waxing, and going through electrolysis at least six weeks before your session. The treatment targets the hair roots, so you should leave them intact. Also, avoid sun exposure, including UV tanning beds, around six weeks before and after treatment, since sun exposure can make the treatment less effective and can lead to complications. When preparing for a hair removal treatment, the patient needs to shave the area being treated. If there is exposed hair, there’s a risk that the client could get burned from the laser. 

The same goes for Botox injections, dermal filler injections, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion in the treatment area for at least 14 days before your session.

Three days before treatment, keep the area for treatment free from topical products that can cause photosensitivity. These products include hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, retinols, and benzoyl peroxide. Stick to gentle cleansers and lotion in the meantime.

You may experience some swelling and redness in the treated area after the procedure. This is normal and will disappear after several days. The treated area will feel like you have a sunburn or razor burn immediately after the session. You can apply over-the-counter hydrocortisone or aloe vera to alleviate redness and irritation.

Over the course of two weeks, you will see hair in the treated area shed slowly. Patchy hair growth is normal and will completely dissipate at the end of your treatment series. Avoid exposure to excessive heat and don’t work out for 24 hours after your laser hair removal. Avoid the products mentioned in the pre-treatment care for three days after your session and use a gentle cleanser and lotion on the treated areas.
